How do I recognise a genuine Elsevier security seal?
Last updated on January 15, 2025Genuine Elsevier Product security seals are optically variable devices that have a number of visible and covert security features including:
- Two-tone GENUINE ELSEVIER PRODUCT indicator.
- Unique ID.
- Data Matrix barcode.
- Two-channel text switch from 'GENUINE' to 'PRODUCT'.
The combination of features makes our security seals virtually impossible to copy.

Your security seal can be authenticated in two ways: via the Data Matrix barcode or via its Unique ID, please select from the options below and follow the steps provided:
Your security seal contains a unique Data Matrix barcode that can be used to authenticate your purchase:
- Scan the Data Matrix barcode with a 2D Data Matrix barcode reader. Barcode readers are freely available for iOS, Android and Windows phone. i-nigma, Scandit and NeoReader are suitable apps that can read Data Matrix codes.
- Scanning the barcode will direct you to an authentication page. Your unique ID will be pre-populated.
- Click 'Authenticate'.
After completing these steps you will receive one of the following messages if your book is a genuine Elsevier book or not:
If Yes:
'Congratulations your book is a genuine Elsevier product!'
If No:
'We’re sorry but we could not authenticate that your purchase is a genuine Elsevier product. Please contact our Support Center for further assistance.'
If you are unable to authenticate your Elsevier product, please contact us using one of the options located belowand please include:
- The ID
- ISBN
- Date of purchase
- Place of your purchase
Your security seal contains a unique ID that can be used to authenticate your purchase:
- Go to http://www.elsevier.com/genuine and select the 'Authenticate your book' option in the 'Quick links'.
- Enter your unique ID into the input boxes.
- Box 1 has space for two uppercase letters and six digits.
- Box 2 has space for three uppercase letters.
- Click 'Authenticate'.
After completing these steps you will receive one of the following messages if your book is a genuine Elsevier book or not:
If Yes:
'Congratulations your book is a genuine Elsevier product!'
If No:
'We’re sorry but we could not authenticate that your purchase is a genuine Elsevier product. Please contact our Support Center for further assistance.'
